AUSTRALIA WELCOMES BOBOW BACK TO VICTORY AS ROLLIE RETURNS TO PODIUM WITH HAGGISNT!
Rankupwithme looked like the favourite for much of the main race. Despite receiving a three-second penalty that likely cost him victory, the Williams driver remained firmly in contention until Lap 27, when an apparent understeer moment at the fast chicane sent him into Bobow. The incident launched Rankup's car into retirement, though having completed over 90% of the race distance still allowed him to salvage tenth place and, crucially, retain the championship lead.
Australia proved brutally difficult for the grid. Drivers struggled all weekend to tame the new electric power units, and the feature race quickly turned into a survival test. Multiple Safety Cars repeatedly shuffled strategies, rewarding those able to stay out of trouble.
Bobow did exactly that. Starting fourth in his Haas, the reigning champion survived the opening lap incidents, navigated three Safety Car periods and found himself defending from a charging HaggisNT in the closing stages. Haggis continued his excellent return season by bringing the Alpine home second, narrowly missing out on victory but strengthening both his and Alpine's championship ambitions.
Third place went to Rollie, who claimed his first podium since last season's opener at Spa. Starting only tenth, the Alpine driver quietly stayed in contention while faster rivals eliminated themselves, eventually emerging from a frantic six-car battle near the front to secure a long-awaited return to the rostrum.
Dunce delivered another solid performance for VisaRB. Despite suffering front wing damage in an opening lap pile-up, he recovered strongly and found pace after the final Safety Car, ultimately taking fourth after participating in the intense late-race battle for victory.
Scaparro continued his impressive start to the new era with fifth in the Red Bull. The result came despite persistent braking issues throughout the race and some timely Safety Car assistance. While several quicker cars retired ahead, the consistency shown by Scaparro is rapidly becoming one of the stories of the season.
Atisthrottle produced an excellent drive on his first appearance in Cadillac colours, scoring sixth and immediately showing promising pace. Further back, NoirEclipseRacing secured seventh for Audi with another composed and mature performance, while Justin salvaged eighth for Haas despite losing ground during a late double-stack situation behind teammate Bobow.
Crunchypancake completed a remarkable recovery to ninth for Mercedes after surviving the carnage, while Rankup rounded out the classified runners.
For those further down the order, the race proved unforgiving. Rothnz's Australian GP quickly turned into a comedy of errors. Lap 1 contact with Atisthrottle left the Ferrari with wing damage and a puncture, before a bizarre game bug turned his trip back to the pits into what felt like an endurance race of its own, costing him almost seven minutes in total. Despite finding the whole ordeal funny enough to laugh through it, his evening finally ended when he encountered the stationary Williams of Rankupwithme parked the wrong way at the end of the long straight, bringing an already cursed race to an early conclusion
Energetic's race never truly got going. Already carrying underbody damage from Lap 1 while trying to avoid a spinning VisaRB, with the Mercedes driver also feeling he was left with little room by Rollie in the aftermath, he nevertheless committed to an ambitious strategy by fitting hard tyres as early as Lap 2 and attempting to take them to the finish, albeit an earlier finish then needed to be classified.
ToxxicElijah, Yeshurrun, Box-for-inters, Fragiletunnel and Sir Ibbo all joined the lengthy retirement list. Box-for-inters, making his A1881 debut while reserving for Cajoco, showed impressive raw pace throughout the weekend and even contributed valuable sprint points before his feature race ended prematurely.
The survival theme meant that simply reaching the chequered flag was an achievement in itself. With so many DNFs, NoirEclipseRacing, Atisthrottle and Crunchypancake deserved special mention for keeping their cars out of trouble and collecting strong results.
The championship picture remains fascinating after two rounds. Rankupwithme still leads the standings despite his retirement, but HaggisNT and Rollie sit close behind, while Bobow's victory immediately places the reigning champion firmly back into contention.
Winner Bobow interview: "It was a very chaotic race, turn 1 a lot of happening and later in lap 1 with a big unfortunate crash BoxForInters behind me, we touched eachother, then a 2nd SC later that made our strategy a 2 stop... and some medium runners were lucky there.. and later it switched around with a 3rd SC.. and I was just in front of Jus my TM8.. so he would have lost a few positions with double pit stop. And then lap 28 we had very unfortunate touch of cars aswell and Rank Up his car flipped and was done.. and last lap defending on a very fast racey Haggis, so I am happy to be back! It was a bit of a struggle, but we try to overcome those. See you in Austria all."
