THE CROWN EDGES CLOSER TO RANKUPWITHME WITH HUNGARY WIN AFTER BOLD STRATEGY CALL, AS BARDS BOTTLES ANOTHER MAIDEN WIN...
The final 100% race of Season 24 delivered another strategic thriller, and once again it was the Williams duo stealing the show. Rankupwithme claimed victory after withstanding relentless late pressure from teammate Bards, while Furios_Donyy56 secured his first A1881 podium for Haas in only his second full-time appearance. With another maximum score, Rankup now has one hand firmly on the championship crown as the season heads into its closing rounds...
Williams looked untouchable all weekend. Rankup committed to an unconventional soft-to-hard strategy while much of the field leaned toward mediums, and it paid off brilliantly. After slicing through traffic following his first stop, he had built a commanding 19-second advantage before contact with a backmarker damaged his front wing and forced an unscheduled early stop. Suddenly the race was alive again as Bards, armed with tyres around 15 laps fresher, hunted down his teammate over the closing stages.
And then... Bards happened.
Just when it looked like the longest-awaited maiden victory in recent A1881 history was finally within touching distance, he snapped the rear exiting the final corner while preparing his decisive attack. At this point, the A1881 Hall of Fame might need a separate exhibit titled "Almost Bards." Another dramatic near miss means the wait for that elusive first victory continues.
Furios_Donyy56 continued to justify Haas' faith in signing him, quietly driving a composed race to third place after showing promising speed since joining the grid. Keon once again impressed in the Ferrari, crossing the line fourth after another mature performance despite a time penalty. Scaparro rounded out the top five for Red Bull after an entertaining race packed with battles, making the most of limited preparation and enjoying particularly memorable fights with NaeDangerDavid and Yeshurrun.
JollyBoyJohn returned to A1881 after a long absence, now proudly balancing racing duties with fatherhood after welcoming a baby girl. Reserving for HaggisNT, he immediately delivered valuable Alpine points with a strong sixth-place finish.
Rollie endured a frustrating race after arriving with very limited last minute practice. His pace never looked quite right, and only when pitting late for soft tyres in an unsuccessful attempt at the fastest lap did he discover he'd been carrying front wing damage throughout the entire second stint following contact with Energetic. The incident came after Rollie spun, leaving Energetic with nowhere to go as he collided into the stranded Alpine. Rollie's fastest-lap gamble also fell apart after traffic ruined his final attempt.
Atisthrottle collected more solid Cadillac points ahead of NaeDangerDavid, who delivered a respectable reserve drive for Audi. Naedanger crossed the line as P6 but was classified as P9 due to wilcard points for Luca is limited to P9. Yeshurrun never quite recovered from allergic sneezes and having to go AI back and forth all race. He still showed great commitment to see the finish, limiting damage with P10. Mrbenchod claimed another finish for Aston Martin. Box-for-inters and Sir Ibbo completed the classified runners despite heavy time penalties.
San, reserving for Ferrari, retired before the finish despite having good pace at first stint. TrenchGhost became the latest Swedish addition to the A1881 grid. The debutant showed encouraging pace during his first non-line race before retiring midway through the event.
Mercedes endured a miserable afternoon as Energetic retired after the earlier collision with Rollie, while Crunchypancake also failed to see the chequered flag. Justin's difficult adaptation to the new generation of cars continued with another retirement for Haas, while ToxxicElijah and Fragiletunnel also exited before the finish.
With just two rounds remaining, Rankupwithme has stretched his championship advantage to 33 points over teammate Bards, putting the Williams driver in commanding position to capture his first A1881 Drivers' Championship. Williams themselves continue to dominate the Constructors' standings, extending their advantage to over 140 points.
It feels incredible to be back on top after missing Spa. I knew we had something special this weekend after all the testing I did. The biggest decision was the strategy. While most drivers were looking at the conventional medium strategy, the mediums were overheating far too quickly, so I committed to starting on softs and switching to the hards early.
The race was going perfectly. After the first stop, I was able to carve my way through the field, and by the time Bards made his stop, I had built a 19-second advantage. Unfortunately, a backmarker caused front wing damage, forcing me to pit much earlier than planned. That completely brought Bards back into contention, and after all that work, it came down to the final laps.
He drove an incredible race and pushed me all the way to the finish, but I managed to keep him behind and bring home the win. Looking back, I truly believe that without the wing damage, we would've won by a much bigger margin. Still, that's racing. I'm proud that all the preparation paid off, the strategy worked exactly as we expected, and we're leaving Hungary with another victory. 🏆
