BOBOW HOLDS OFF MEJG IN JEDDAH THRILLER TO TAKE CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD
Bobow led a tightly contested Saudi Arabian GP from start to finish, holding off Mejg and SV5 on the podium, with Rollie just missing out in fourth after another strong showing in the Mercedes...
Qualifying had already set the tone, with Bobow and Mejg locked in a fierce fight for pole. It was the Williams driver who delivered when it mattered most, putting in a stunning lap that ultimately defined the race. From the moment the lights went out, Bobow controlled the pace, but never comfortably, with the reigning champion Mejg glued to him throughout in the Haas.
Even a late safety car, triggered when Rothnz found the wall while daydreaming about his prime, couldn’t shake things up at the front. With seven laps to go and a long DRS straight looming, it looked like Mejg might finally get his chance, but Bobow remained composed, managing the restart perfectly and keeping just enough margin to secure the win.
SV5 completed the podium with a solid and controlled drive in the Alpine, notably keeping Rollie behind for the entirety of the race. Rollie, once again looking comfortable in his Mercedes, pushed throughout but couldn’t quite find a way past, settling for fourth in another consistent performance that keeps him firmly in the title conversation.
Behind them, Dunce quietly put together a strong recovery in the Ferrari, climbing from ninth on the grid to fifth without much drama, while Rankupwithme, stepping in with a wildcard for championship leader Justin in the VisaRB, delivered valuable points despite not being able to replicate Justin’s Spa dominance. Rankup’s race wasn’t without incident either, picking up damage after Bards had his own daydreaming moment, though the late safety car relatively neutralized the impact.
One of the standout stories came from Luca, making an impressive debut in the Williams. Starting from the midfield, he drove a clean and confident race to finish seventh, helping Williams secure becoming team of the week and also contributing valuable wildcard points for Javinwain.
Keon added to Haas’ strong weekend with a steady drive into eighth, supporting his teammate Mejg in the championship fight, while Bards in the Alpine had a more difficult race, recovering to ninth after earlier contact. Selecta rounded out the top ten in the Ferrari, admitting defeat already against Rollie and stating his only aim is to collect fastest lap points all season...
Just outside the points, SCRFtronc brought the Red Bull home in eleventh after a busy race, followed by Yeshurrun in the Mercedes, who once again struggled to convert grid position into a clean result. Crunchypancake had a challenging evening in the McLaren, dealing with multiple stops and finishing thirteenth.
Further back, Sir Ibbo managed a steady run for Kick Sauber, while NaeDangerDavid endured a tough race with several pit stops in the second Sauber. Tvoje continued to struggle for consistency in the Red Bull, and Elche, stepping in for McLaren duties, completed the finishing order among the classified runners for finishing 90% of the race, despite retiring late in race.
Rothnz’s race ended in the barriers, bringing out the decisive safety car and marking a frustrating end to what had been a quiet race up to that point.
With this result, Bobow now takes over the championship lead, making a strong statement early in the season and positioning himself as a genuine title contender against Mejg and the rest of the field.
“I can’t be happier! The Williams car felt planted in qualy and race. I felt very confident in both, but I needed to push the whole race with a very fast driver and current champion MejG behind me!” To the question of if he'll be dethroning Mejg, he was reluctant to give a headline response but optimistic: "Im staying humble, he is one of the quickest and he is able to fight for the win every race, its very early season aswell, but the sky is the limit and I like this challenge".
We are heading to reverse layout Austria next week for Round 3.
