AA_Mejg led home Justin and Rian in a stop-start Azerbaijan Grand Prix that saw three safety cars, split strategies, and a late dash to the flag define the race in Baku.
Starting from pole after mastering tricky, changeable qualifying conditions, Mejg controlled much of the race in his Haas. The opening laps were surprisingly calm around the tight streets, with the only early flashpoint coming when Tvoje_mamkacz suffered wheelspin exiting Turn 3 and slid into the wall, collecting Rollie in the process. Both picked up early damage and were forced into first-lap stops, ruining their hopes of stretching the hard tyre deep into the race.
What followed was a race heavily shaped by neutralisations. Yeshurrun’s error into the pits did the earlier interruption. Charldinho, running strongly near the front for Ferrari, clipped the wall in the narrow castle section and triggered the last safety car. In total, nine laps were spent behind the safety car, leaving just 17 laps of proper racing and constantly resetting gaps.
Justin kept himself firmly in the fight for KICK Sauber, shadowing Mejg throughout and positioning himself perfectly for the final restart. Rian completed a strong double podium for Haas, keeping the pressure on both leaders and continuing his upward trend after a difficult start to the season.
The final safety car, coming with only five laps remaining, split the field in two. Half the grid dived for soft tyres that had been saved thanks to a rainy Q3, while the others stayed out to protect track position. Mejg was among those who chose to remain on circuit, a decision that proved decisive. Justin did the same and lined up right behind him. Jordan, however, opted for fresh softs but could not carve his way back through quickly enough, and a three-second penalty dropped him to eighth by the flag.
Behind the podium trio, Bards brought the Williams home fourth in another consistent performance that keeps him firmly in the title mix. Javinwain produced one of the drives of the day, climbing from the back half of the grid in his Aston Martin to finish fifth.
Energetic, reserving in the McLaren, delivered a clean and impressive sixth-place finish, ahead of Dunce in the other Aston Martin. Jordan’s recovery to eighth still salvaged points despite the late penalty.
Rollie, despite the early damage and four pit stops, battled back to ninth in the Williams, finally getting some recovery momentum even if luck still seems reluctant to fully return. Gordini completed the top ten for Alpine after a scrappy but resilient race.
SCR_FTronc followed in eleventh for Red Bull, his hopes after last sc being denied by Gordini's questionable rejoin giving him wing damage. SV5 endured a surprisingly muted race in the VisaRB car, finishing twelfth and losing ground in the championship fight, while tangling with a few drivers throughout the race, bringing flashbacks of the race where he received a season ban 2 seasons ago. Tvoje’s early clash left him fighting damage and strategy limitations, crossing the line thirteenth. Selecta had a quiet but busy afternoon with four stops in the other VisaRB, finishing fourteenth.
Sir Ibbo brought the McLaren home fifteenth, making this one of the rare races where he wasn't the last driver alive on track while Crunchypancake followed in the Ferrari after missing quali. Charldinho, Scaparro, Yeshurrun, and NaeDangerDavid all retired. For Scaparro, it was another frustrating chapter, admitting that fatigue led to too many mistakes in both qualifying and race trim.
With Haas now leading the constructors’ standings and Mejg reclaiming the drivers’ championship lead, the momentum has clearly shifted again. Next stop: Interlagos, Rollie’s pick, where he’ll be hoping Brazil’s flowing layout finally breaks his streak of bad luck.
