SUZUKA FINALE: MEJG TAKES HAAS TO VICTORY, JORDAN & JUSTIN DELIVER WCC FOR KICK SAUBER, KEON SHINES WITH LONG AWAITED PODIUM
AA_Mejg capped off his already historic campaign with another win at Suzuka, leading home Jordan and a resurgent Keon in a rain-tinged finale that also locked in the final pieces of the championship puzzle. With Justin just missing the podium in fourth, it was enough to secure him P3 in the Drivers’ standings and, alongside Jordan, the Constructors’ title for KICK Sauber after a season-long duel with Haas.
Up front, Mejg wasted no time slicing through the field, recovering from P8 and soon locking horns with the KICK Sauber duo of Jordan and Justin. Strategy played a key role as the trio cycled through stops, with Mejg and Jordan breaking clear after the first round. Justin briefly held firm but a mistake opened the door, leaving him chasing from behind.
As the race entered its final phase, light rain began to fall, adding a final layer of tension. Jordan attempted to stretch the conditions and apply pressure, but penalties kept him from mounting a serious challenge. Mejg, calm as ever, controlled the gap to take yet another victory, underlining a season where he was rarely anything but dominant.
Mejg: I missed out on pole by locking up my rear tires and drifting into the chicane. Starting from P2 I was expecting to be first or second going into turn 1, but a game glitch with the start lights made me go down to P8. I worked my way back fairly quickly and then found myself behind the two Kick Sauber drivers Jordan & Justin. After some fuel saving in P3 and a mistake from Justin, me and Jordan boxed first from P1 & P2. We got the gap to Justin and pushed all the way to the finish. Some interesting tactics from Jordan towards the end when the rain came, but due to his 6 sec track limit penalties, I felt comfortable and in control.
It feels great finishing this amazing and for me historic season in the best possible way! 6 drivers' championship titles in 7 seasons as a full time driver is more than I could have dreamed of. Thank you HAAS family for all the great memories in season 22!
Behind the top four, rothNz brought the Ferrari home in fifth after a steady drive, while Selecta quietly secured sixth for VisaRB. Bards19 followed in the Williams, rounding out a strong season that saw him firmly in the upper standings, missing his first medal with only 20 points.
Gordini added more points for Alpine in eighth, while Rollie’s long recovery drive finally paid off late on. A perfectly timed switch to intermediates allowed him to overtake both Red Bulls of SCR_FTronc and Yeshurrun, the latter gambling on slicks for too long as the rain intensified. And yes, once again, Rollie ends the season ahead of Selecta… Some things don't seem to change.
SCR_FTronc and Yeshurrun had to settle for the lower end of the points after that late-race shuffle, while Elche, stepping in, delivered another solid outing in the Mercedes. Crunchypancake and Sir Ibbo followed for Ferrari and McLaren respectively, both enduring quiet but clean races.
Further back, it was a race of attrition. Bobow retired in the pits after feeling unwell, while NaeDangerDavid also called it a day early. Tvoje_mamkacz never even got the chance to race properly, stuck with an AI-controlled car after a formation lap glitch, resulting in being removed from classification.
One major absentee was SV5-3787, who couldn’t join due to connection issues, a costly last-minute join that ultimately handed Justin the final podium spot in the championship standings.
And then there was Keon. After a tough stretch, the McLaren driver came alive in the changing conditions, showcasing excellent wet pace to snatch a long-awaited podium. A timely reminder of his potential, and a standout moment to close his season.
Looking at the bigger picture, Season 22 will be remembered for Mejg’s relentless dominance. Securing his sixth title before the finale and finishing with 346 points, he once again set the benchmark. Behind him, Jordan’s consistency earned him P2, while Justin’s late-season push secured both his first Drivers’ medal and the Constructors’ crown for KICK Sauber.
The WCC fight was one of the closest in recent memory, with Sauber ultimately prevailing over Haas 520 to 469, while Williams and VisaRB rounded out a tightly packed midfield battle, with the superior line-up of Williams coming on top as expected. 😎
From chaotic reverse grids to strategic masterclasses and unexpected heroes, Season 22 had it all. And at the center of it once again stood Mejg, rewriting the history books with a level of consistency and control that continues to define the A1881 era.
We are heading to Season 23, with CAS planned on Thursday 16:00 CET to reshuffle the cars.
