REVERSE CHAOS, FORWARD LEGACY: MEJG SEALS TITLE NUMBER SIX IN ZANDVOORT
A controversial reverse-layout trip to the Netherlands ended in historic fashion, as AA_Mejg dominated the race at Zandvoort to secure his sixth A1881 title. Behind him, Jordan was classified second for KICK Sauber, while Yeshurrun claimed his first ever official A1881 podium in third after post-race classification adjustments bringing Endru down to P4 despite finishing second on track...
From the start, Mejg looked untouchable. The Haas driver converted pole into an early lead and immediately began building a gap, showing the kind of control that has defined his championship runs. Even on a tricky reversed layout that many drivers openly questioned, Mejg seemed completely at ease, inching closer lap by lap to yet another crown.
Behind him, the fight was far less straightforward. Endru, reserving in the Aston Martin for Javinwain, had strong pace and actually crossed the line in second place on track, but due to reserve driver limitations was classified fourth. That promoted Jordan to second, a crucial result that also locks in P2 in the Drivers’ Championship ahead of the season finale.
The biggest story just behind them came from Yeshurrun. The Red Bull driver delivered a clean and consistent race to take third on the road after penalties and classification shifts, securing his first official podium in A1881, a milestone moment after a season of ups and downs.
Further down, Tvoje brought the Mercedes home in fifth with a steady drive, while Rollie recovered to sixth in the Williams after a chaotic opening phase. Early in the race, Rollie and SV5-3787 were involved in multiple tangles that left both drivers with damage and struggling for rhythm. While Rollie managed to recover somewhat, SV5’s race unraveled further with additional mistakes, and by the time the Safety Car arrived later on, he had already been lapped, leaving him unable to capitalize.
Bards finished seventh in the second Williams after starting near the front, unable to quite match the pace of the leaders but still securing solid points. Justin followed in eighth for KICK Sauber, keeping himself in the fight for third in the Drivers’ standings heading into the final round.
Bobow, reserving in the Alpine for Naedangerdavid, crossed the line ninth after a race that included a late incident with Bards that cost him positions, while Elche delivered an impressive reserve performance in the Mercedes for Scaparro. Despite finishing eighth on track, Elche was classified tenth due to the reserve points limitation rule, marking yet another “what could have been” result.
SCR_FTronc finished just outside the top ten in the Red Bull after a relatively quiet race, while SV5 eventually classified twelfth after his early setbacks. Sir_Ibbo followed in the McLaren, involved in early action including a bold move on rothNz at Turn 1 on lap two that ultimately contributed to the Ferrari driver’s difficult race.
Rothnz, referred to as the GOAT, endured a frustrating afternoon. After that early incident, he struggled to regain confidence and later retired following the second Safety Car period, visibly demoralized after fighting a losing battle on the reversed layout.
Energetic’s race also ended early after starting from the back due to not setting a qualifying time, while Selecta added another DNF to his record—quitting the race after yielding to Rollie's supremacy and staying true to form.
The race itself remained relatively clean for such an unusual configuration, with no Safety Cars until lap 27 when Energetic’s retirement brought out the first. A second followed after rothNz’s exit, briefly bunching up the field and creating a final moment of tension at the front.
That late restart nearly changed everything. With fresher tyres, Endru and Jordan closed in on Mejg, setting up a tense final stint. But the Haas driver held firm under pressure, fending off the challenge and pulling through to take both the win and the championship in style.
With this victory, Mejg not only secures his sixth Drivers’ Championship—surpassing rothNz in total titles—but does so with a performance that underlined his control across the season.
“Last time out, at the Chinese GP, I messed up my tyre choice behind the safety car and rejoined the race in P18 which was 12,5 sec behind the train. It was a 50 lap full push comeback drive which on the last lap and in the last sector saw me overtake for a P3 finish. At the time that felt like a victory.
Today, at the Netherlands reverse track for the first time, I came in with some proper preparations for once. I felt confident in the car on this track, and after getting pole position I could see that 6th WDC title in my mind. I got off to a good start and pulled a gap. That championship title was edging closer lap by lap and I felt unstoppable ...until the safety car came out with less than 10 laps to go. Due to different strategies Endru and Jordan would restart with fresher tyres. I just thought to myself: "There's no way I'll lose like this!?" Endru made a good effort on the last lap, very tight racing, and in the end I came out as the happiest man tonight by winning the race, and most importantly securing that historic 6th world drivers' championship. As the saying goes: We came, we saw, we conquered. Time to celebrate!
Thank you to my good friend Jordan, to all my teammates through the seasons, to the A1881 staff and to all the drivers who I've shared the track with these past years! 🙏 I appreciate you all 💙
