The Australian Grand Prix delivered drama from the very first corners, but in the end it was AA_Mejg who conquered Albert Park with a commanding drive for Haas. The championship leader led home a strong KICK Sauber pairing of Jordan in second and Justin in third, while SV5-3787 produced one of the drives of the race to finish fourth for VisaRB after starting deep in the field.
The race began under wet conditions, and trouble arrived almost immediately. Crunchypancake’s Ferrari was squeezed into the wall by Valward’s McLaren on the opening lap, triggering the first Safety Car before the field had even properly settled. It was an eye-catching incident that immediately reshaped strategy across the grid.
With the track rapidly drying around lap eight, teams faced a tricky call. About half the field gambled on switching to slick tyres before the Safety Car returned to the pits, but the surface was still too damp and those drivers paid the price. Among those caught out was Williams contender Bards, whose early gamble cost valuable time in the fight toward the front.
Up ahead, however, three drivers began separating themselves from the rest. Mejg’s Haas, Jordan’s KICK Sauber, and Justin’s sister car found each other on track after the second Safety Car and spent much of the race running nose-to-tail within DRS range. Despite the pressure, Mejg looked completely in control. The Haas driver kept his race spotless—no warnings, no penalties—and when it mattered most he simply pulled away in the final laps to seal a convincing victory.
Jordan’s second place helped KICK Sauber maintain pressure in the constructors’ standings, while Justin’s podium from seventh on the grid completed a superb team result.
Just behind the podium came one of the standout performances of the race. SV5-3787 climbed from nineteenth on the grid after serving a qualifying ban to finish fourth in the VisaRB. The recovery was particularly impressive given his past struggles when stuck behind slower traffic, but this time he carved through the pack efficiently and joined the lead train late in the race.
His teammate Selecta also delivered a very strong afternoon. Running confidently throughout the changing conditions, the VisaRB driver controlled the fight behind the leaders and finished fifth, clearly outperforming Rollie’s Williams across each stint. 😒
Javinwain brought the Aston Martin home sixth after starting near the front, navigating the tricky conditions without major drama. Behind him, rothNz produced another reminder of why many still call him the GOAT. After a difficult qualifying session and a costly early switch to slick tyres in the Ferrari, he fought his way back through the field to secure seventh.
The midfield fight had its own share of drama. NaeDangerDavid’s Alpine, Bards19’s Williams, and Rollie spent a long portion of the race circulating together within DRS range and trading pressure. That battle was disrupted when Red Bull’s Yeshurrun, already a lap down, jumped aggressively onto the apex at pit exit and interfered with the group. The moment cost all three drivers time, but Rollie suffered most by losing the DRS train. Later, another clash occurred when Yeshurrun attempted to unlap himself through the fast chicane, causing Rollie to half-spin and drop further back.
In the end NaeDangerDavid secured eighth, Bards salvaged ninth after the earlier strategy setback and losing time around Scaparro, and Rollie rounded out the top ten with no penalties.
Scaparro’s race told a story of frustration. The Mercedes driver had delivered one of his best qualifying performances - reportedly after borrowing Jordan’s setup - but an early disconnection derailed his race. To make matters worse, the game forced him into the pits during the first Safety Car for another set of intermediates, leaving him with a mountain to climb before finishing just outside the top ten.
Charldinho, reserving for Energetic in the Haas, had a true wildcard afternoon with several up-and-down moments including skirmishes with Javinwain, yet still managed to bring the car home with points for the team.
Further back, Gordini struggled for pace in the Alpine and was also penalized with ten seconds for an illegal overtake after Sir_Ibbo ran wide while trying to yield the position. Valward completed the race in the McLaren while serving Keon’s qualifying ban, while SCR_FTronc and Dunce endured quiet races in the midfield pack, the latter at least clinching the fastest lap.
Yeshurrun eventually finished seventeenth after the earlier incidents, with Ibbo just behind in the McLaren.
At the back of the order were two retirements. Tvoje’s Mercedes had a race to forget before eventually dropping out, while Crunchypancake’s Ferrari was the most dramatic exit of the day after the Lap 1 wall squeeze that brought out the first Safety Car.
With the result now in the books, Mejg strengthens his grip on the Drivers’ Championship with 237 points, ahead of Jordan and SV5. In the Constructors’ standings Haas extend their advantage at the top with 352 points, though KICK Sauber remain firmly in pursuit after their double podium.
Winner interview added later:
Mejg: Happy to set a personal best in the session when it mattered the most in Q3. In the race I was lightning fast the first few laps in the wet, and on the drying track (very tricky conditions). Managed to build a gap that the safety car later on took away. For the remainder of the race it was a 3-way battle between me, Jordan and Justin - literally nothing between us. We were all on a different level today and there were absolutely no room for errors. I felt like I had a slightly more stable setup, which helped me stay consistent and avoid mistakes. No warnings and crossing the line in first place was a great feeling after so many sweaty laps. Great race!
