MEJG HOLDS HIS NERVE AT BARCELONA AS RACING BULLS LOCK OUT SPAIN GP

AA_Mejg took victory at the Spanish GP ahead of Jordan and SV5-3787, completing a tense VisaRB one-two with Mercedes right on their gearbox. From the opening stint to the final two-lap showdown, the podium trio were inseparable, setting the tone for one of the most nervous races of the season so far...

Starting second on the grid, Mejg kept it clean off the line and quickly settled into a race-long duel with Jordan in the sister VisaRB. The two swapped the lead multiple times before a safety car reset the field, and from there it became a tyre and nerve management exercise under constant pressure from SV5’s Mercedes. With puncture warnings appearing late and margins razor-thin, the fight stayed alive all the way to the chequered flag, where Mejg finally sealed his first win of the season.

Mejg interview: “Thanks! Solid qualifying lap which put me in P2 for the race. I had a decent start where I kept my position. Swapped with Jordan for P1 a couple of times before the safety car came out. It was marginal if it was going to work going all the way to the finish on the most durable hard tires, even with tire management. We were managing the tires and kept our P1 and P2 despite SV's efforts. Jordan gave it one last go against me for P1 with 2 laps left of the race. It was a tough side by side battle into turn 1, hard racing and I managed to stay ahead. Since SV was following us along in P3 it was quite risky as well. Considering all of us having a puncture warning towards the end it was quite nervracking all the way until the finish line. Car felt good today and thankfully I came home with my first win of the season and a 5th 1-2 finish for the all Swedish VCARB team in just 6 races so far. GGs”

Behind the top three, Rian brought the Alpine home in fourth after a solid, no-nonsense drive, once again quietly maximizing points with a two stopper while chaos unfolded around him. Bards had one of his stronger outings of the season in the Williams, fending off pressure to secure fifth, while Endru followed closely in the second Alpine playing in cockpit cam, after a cleaner race than his recent run suggested.

Selecta delivered one of the recoveries of the day. Starting deep in the field due to poor qualifying, the Mercedes still clawed its way to seventh, finishing ahead of Dunce’s Aston Martin. Dunce opted for a one-stop strategy and made it work, even after being passed late by faster cars, defending hard on worn tires to the line.

Rothnz, filling in with the Red Bull of Javinwain, finished ninth after a busy race in traffic, just ahead of Tvoje in the Ferrari, who admitted being stuck in DRS trains for most of the race. NaeDangerDavid followed in the Williams after a costly 10s pen for a speedy pit entry, while Rollie had a bruising race with elbows-out moments, especially into Turn 1 with Naedanger, eventually finishing P12.

SCR_FTronc crossed the line in thirteenth after an error while chasing Rollie and an overcut attempt that ultimately changed nothing. Gordini brought the Ferrari home next  ahead of Elche in the Haas, after losing the car early in race and costing himself a broken wing with bypasser Rollie's contact, luckily recovering his race after Crunchy's retirement which brought a timely SC. Scaparro’s race never recovered from a poor launch and a costly safety car call, but the McLaren still saw the flag in sixteenth. Yeshurrun completed a full race in the Sauber, gaining experience despite a quiet run, while Sir Ibbo once again found himself last on the road among the finishers. The fight between Sauber and Haas to save themselves from the bottom of the table continues.

Crunchypancake and Inginne were the only retirements, both ending their races early and leaving the rest of the field to fight it out to the end.

With no Ironghost commentary again, Spain still delivered tension worthy of a full broadcast. Mejg’s win tightens the championship fight at the top, while VisaRB continue to look like the benchmark team—even if, this time, the victory went to the man in the other garage first time this season. Next week will be the first forced cockpit cam race in A1881 history and in Monaco, to help bring an end to Racing Bulls domination.
