SEASON 18 OPENER: CHAMPION MEJG TRIUMPHS IN AUSTRALIA AS DUNCE IMPRESSES
The highly anticipated Season 18 of A1881 kicked off in dramatic fashion at the Australian Grand Prix, with reigning champion AA_Mejg securing victory for Alpine in a chaotic race that saw changing weather conditions, last-lap heartbreaks, and a fierce fight at the front. Dunce, starting from pole position in his Ferrari, showed incredible pace but was ultimately denied his maiden win after an unlucky late-race incident. Aston Martin’s Tvoje Mamkacz surged through the field to claim a podium finish, leading his team to the top of the Constructors' standings...
The race started under dry conditions, but a massive Lap 1 incident behind the leaders left a three-way fight at the front between Mejg, Dunce, and Jordan’s VisaRB. A small mistake from Jordan saw him drop back, setting up an intense duel between Mejg and Dunce for the win. The two were inseparable throughout the race, matching each other’s pace as they prepared for the final crucial phase.
Javinwain, who had delivered an impressive qualifying performance to start in fifth, was seemingly the one to trigger of that Lap 1 crash. The incident cost him and several other drivers dearly, forcing them into recovery mode for the rest of the race.
With around 10 laps to go, light rain began falling, forcing most of the field onto intermediate tires. Bhavish, however, attempted to tough it out on slicks in his Williams, a bold gamble that ultimately did not pay off as he lost ground in the closing stages. The battle for victory took an unexpected turn on Lap 43 when a lapped car spun right in front of the leading duo. Mejg narrowly avoided disaster by taking to the grass, but Dunce was not as fortunate, sustaining damage that ended his challenge for the win. Despite the setback, he still managed to hold on for second, proving his potential as a championship contender.
Behind them, Tvoje Mamkacz delivered a fantastic recovery drive, working his way up from 11th on the grid to claim third place. His performance ensured Aston Martin ended the day as the leading team in the Constructors' standings. Gordini finished fourth, but due to a game error that placed him in the wrong car, his points will be transferred to Quartiux, McLaren’s full-time driver.
Rollie secured a strong fifth-place finish for Aston Martin, capping off a solid day for the team. Meanwhile, NaeDangerDavid and Jordan suffered heartbreak on the final lap as both drivers ran out of fuel, causing them to drop multiple positions right before the checkered flag. NaeDangerDavid still managed to cross the line in sixth, while Jordan ended up seventh.
Bhavish, who had risked staying on dry tires, ultimately finished eighth ahead of Williams teammate Rothnz, who quietly worked his way up from 15th to ninth. TarkanGino rounded out the top 10 in his Mercedes after a steady drive.
Endru, in his first race for Alpine, finished 11th, while Javinwain took 12th for Ferrari, unable to make much progress after the costly Lap 1 crash. Red Bull’s wildcard driver Dan finished 13th, bringing points to Inginne, whom he was substituting for. Keon came home in 14th for Haas, followed by Crunchypancake in the second Red Bull.
Sir Ibbo and Selecta both failed to see the checkered flag. Selecta’s race ended in bizarre fashion (as usual) as a technical issue resulted in an automatic disqualification by the game, while Sir Ibbo retired earlier in the race.
After taking the first win of the season, Mejg reflected on his race: "A great start to the season for sure! To have a chance at the title this season, with Jordan in a VCARB, I know that I have to maximize these first rounds (before he comes back home to his wheel). Anyway, due to an incident behind on lap 1 it became a race between Dunce, Jordan and myself. A small mistake from Jordan made it a 1v1 between me and Dunce and I was leading the train pretty much all race. My pace felt strong, but not amazing. Dunce and I were closely matched and it probably would have been decided when it was time for inters or on the last lap, however a lapped car spun in front of us on lap 43 of 58. I managed to avoid contact by going onto the grass, but unfortunately for Dunce he damaged his car and from there it was just a pleasant ride home to the finish line. I'm happy for the win but of course I feel sorry that Dunce missed out on our battle."
With Aston Martin leading the Constructors' Championship and several drivers showing early promise, Season 18 is shaping up to be an intense fight. The battle continues next Sunday as the grid heads to Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix for another %100 race, mirroring the real-world F1 calendar.
